AVG free and pro has a Real-time protection shield this apart from its Real-time system scanner and its a fact that the shield slows down Internet connection "i have use both and found this to be true" so yes Taz you would be better off using Avast Anti Virus and it will work fine with XP Pro , do uninstall AVG first and clean out any AVG keys from your Registry
