Not to oversimplify, but the computer uses the binary system for its work and communication. Input devices either change information or already have the information stored in binary. The communication route is the bus which is just the part that all the wires will hook to for the transportation of data.

When you store information on a disc, it is stored in binary. When you tell the computer to search for something on a disc, it goes through the information to find what you want. A disc is just the storage area and the processor does all the work, doing thousands of calculations in a very short time (I don't remember the number, but that's a good trivia question).

A pretty good site for learning more about how things work is HowStuffWorks. That's the computer section, as there are other sections about other STUFF. The basic site is HowStuffWorks - Learn how Everything Works!.

I hoped that helped. There's also a book that has a simplified way of explaining how computers work; well, there's several books. But I have one of the Dummies books somewhere!
