The continuous use of RAM to store large amounts of data for extended use can physically ware it out. So eventually, you would have to buy another and another. And I agree, the drive is cheap (which in most cases is), but the actual equipemtn used with it is often expensive. Especially, if it is in Gbs of RAM.

As back-up, this is good. But costly.

Static data storage devices (SDSD) are already around. I prefer them as they don't scratch, can hold considerable amounts of data (500Gb +) and make no noise. They do have the problem at the moment of being slightly slow on the serial bus. But I am sure it will gain speed in time.
