Download the Fasterfox extension (it's basically a GUI for a bunch of config values), and fine tune your memory usage. Disabling the 'fastback' feature alone significantly reduces memory usage, and reduce the memory cache helps.
But for the most part, it is the memory leaks that cause the huge memory footprint. With my tweaks and usage habbits, FF hardly ever goes above 80 megs which is why I'm not too peeved about it. (I seem to close my browser window quite often)
