Intel, for now: I like the ideas behind the newest 45nm stuff, & the fact it outperforms using less power (technically)... the Quad-Core should be out or near to it now, based on that tech!
IF I were to buy now, & was willing to swing it going "top dollar"? I'd go INTEL... for now!
... & like many of you had stated?
Until AMD comes along with a "BETTER deal..."
(Eventually AMD will, & INTEL will disassemble it & come up with an analog that has improvements (& yes, they BOTH do it, vice-a-versa, & I am sure of that statement))...
Heck - Most companies do to one another, all the time, & I've seen it, firsthand myself!
(In that they have buildings & engineering teams tearing up one another's stuff & analyzing it, to come up with diff. ways of doing the same thing, hopefully better, w/ out violating copyrights/patents etc.).
-----
To myself, though, for most of what I do?
It's not the CPU I am mostly concerned about (nice to have, but... heck, I don't WANT the most powerful CPU's, because then I have to worry about making code that depends on "too much power" to run acceptably on SLOWER systems (cpu-wise), as a coder)...
Myself, for my needs, for "power stuff"?
I only really need it in 2 places, for how I use a system, where "power/top power" counts:
1.) On disk, in writes (more than reads, due to DB work I have to do)
&
2.) GPU (gaming makes me STILL do "upgrades" (as I love NVidia stuff, usually always a BIG boost, generation-to-nextgeneration)) ...
Costly though, getting 'sucked-into' the "upgrade-trap" & especially over time... I certainly did & in some ways, I regretted it.

P.S.=> What I've noted, from messing with these machines @ the hardware level from 1991 onwards up to today? Bus speeds get saturated, & even IF/WHEN I get the "top dog" for that bus type vidcard-wise?? Well, "the infamous they" just 'change the rules' again, & intro. a NEW bus type!
E.G.-> I've seen it go from:
(There are 'variations thereof' on some of them too, diff. versions, with diff. 'burst rates' etc. too, & some 'overlapped' one another as well)...
Man - I spent SO much on vidcards over time & mainly because of the "upgrade trap" as I call it? I probably could have bought a cheaper car/winter rat extra one with that cash... OR, a better one than I have now as my main ride.
That's just some "food for thought" is all that is, not a put-down (if you're into that stuff nowadays is all, in upgrading every so often etc. on certain parts!)... apk
