Google Earth can be downloaded at
Google Earth.
Origins: Google Earth was originally called
Earth View. It mapped the earth by superimposing aerial photography, satellite imagery, and a computer generated graphics globe.
Google Earth was released and the viewing of the earth maps increases dramatically in 2005 and 2006. What was once used for business has now become a pasttime hobby for many users.
Functions: Google has combined the powers of the aforementioned programming to put the "world" at every users fingertips. The user can locate their homes, places they wish to visit, businesses, get driving directions, and even a good look at what they may be wanting to visit.
There are 3 versions of
Google Earth, (1)
Google Earth, the free version, (2)
Google Earth Plus, a paid an enhanced version for home or personal use, and (3)
Google Earth Pro, a paid version for businesses or commercial use.
Released in August 2007 was the Sky Mode which allowed us to no longer just look at the earth but to be able to look to the stars from where we want situated on the earth.
There are many, many things that can be done with this program and we'll continue to talk about them through this thread.
Privacy Issues: There is a lot of discussion that this free distribution of locations is an invasion of privacy. Though this information is available on paper (at locations like court houses and government offices), it is more readily available via the internet. Please feel free to discuss your feelings about privacy issues with this program.
