This seams the way nVidia and ATI are going ATM SLI or Crossfire in one Graphics Card, my ATI 3870x2 is Crossfire in one and i must say works very well, but is this a statement by the two main contenders that they have gone as far as they can in single chip cards ? is multi chip GPUs the future ?

Well, I started looking @ vidcards lately!
(MAINLY, because of the new Gx280 series coming out by NVidia (Smokin' F A S T card, but the costs are still way, WAY up there imo... even for a 40% boost over the 9800 GTX it offers))... & yes, though I usually WON'T do this (very often, lol)? I am going to be upgrading here from an 8800 GT (which was updated from a 7900 GTX around 1/2 a yr. back or so), & now, to this 9800 GTX: E.G.-> The 'latest/greatest' from NVidia, in the Gx260 & Gx280 have driven DOWN the price of the 9800 GTX to around $200 U.S. Dollars... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ies-_-14143137 (... & in a few weeks, a month tops I am guessing?? I might nail one for $175 or so!) ![]() HOWEVER: "On-the-Cheap" - the 'upgrade trap' is one I usually avoid, but, this will be the very LAST 1 this particular machine will see. (I say this, because heck - I "can't resist" it... ) * At least that's what I am hoping will happen... APK P.S.=> $175 is a HECK of a lot less than NVidia (or even ATI's) init. asking prices on these boards when they release (generally around $450-$600 ranges)... STILL - vidcards? Ah - They "get me, everytime"... (That's as far as the ONLY thing I usually DO upgrade/update thru the life of any system I have (generally 4-5 yrs. of my owning + using them, usually))... apk

Down to $170 now, for the 9800 GTX (as I suspected it would be, back on the 3rd of this month, above):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TAC-_-14500037 ![]() * Time to upgrade, once I get a brakejob done on my car outta the way next week... 2 weeks more tops, & I'd wager I land this vidcard for $165 !!! APK

The guy who's the 'brains' behind the outfit? A programming genius imo, & it shows, everytime he releases a NEW game, with a new engine (often 'state-of-the-art'/'cutting-edge' each time). What displays OpenGL the best?? NVidia... & their GeForce line, year-in & year-out, hands-down, vs their largest competitor ATI (who is traditionally stronger in DirectX but as of late? Nvidia's caught them, & STILL is stronger in OpenGL - especially for SPEED of its display!) That 9800 GTX I am after? It's not moving ANY lower in price (& I was ALMOST exactly right in my prediction here weeks ago too, got lucky, it was what I budgeted for)! So, next Monday??? I am on one, like "white-on-rice"... Sure - it's not their Gx-280 (top-of-the-line, but my days of being an 'early adopter sucker' are long gone (I wait & usually buy a generation removed from the latest, to save coins/dead-presidents is why)). HOWEVER, I'm NOT into "throwing out" $500-$700 for that level of power... not when I can wait a year or two, & double my power video-wise, for 1/4th of that "usurious intial asking price" (for newly released vidcards, this is the case, usually) almost. It's always JUST A MATTER of time, patience, & perseverance. And, even doing that? WELL, usually (like last time, moving from a 7900GTX to an 8800GT)? I gained DOUBLE my previous card's speed... No, I won't this time, according to THIS review from my fav. website for reviews of vidcards (of which I was a longtime member but, lol, got 'kicked out' from their forums, lol): TECHPOWERUP! http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/L...00_GTX/13.html Sometimes, I miss the place: I respect their owner, as a coder, & like he as a person too! (W1zzard is his "handle/nickname" out here online - He does 2 VERY popular apps, usually amongst gamers & vidcard testers too, called ATITool + GPU-Z) Their site still host wares of mine to this day off of their servers too, pretty nice (considering how things ended there, as to my association w/ they & all). Ahhh, anyhow: This review & the price did it for me, especially on Quake IV, & Quake Wars (IDSoftware games) The 9800GTX is only probably @ most/overall, 20++% faster than my current card, but its WAY better power usage wise, IF you took a peek @ the "performance-per-dollar/performance-per-watt" especially (have to be conscious of this, prices for electricity have doubled the past 2-3 yrs. now) & also better OVERALL technology too... so, between that & the price now ($175 or so after rebate)???? Well, gotta have it - even though the 8800GT, my current card, is rated the "best overall value" in terms of 'performance-per-dollar' &/or 'performance-per-watt' & overall best value? I can "just squeeze by" here, & sneak this one in per my budget for it. APK P.S.=> Can't wait - I already have a buyer lined up for my current card too, a pal of mine, so that will "offset the cost outlay" that much more too... apk
