Need a new hard drive.

I'm upgrading a friends PC, but only adding some RAM and a larger harddrive. His specs follow:

Compaq Presario 8000T Series
256m DDR Ram (replacing with 2gig DDR PC 32000)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU
60gig UDMA HDD (replacing this)
Windows XP home edition 32 bit
I think that's enough

He doesn't need a huge harddrive, nor a gaming rig, but does need it to be a little bigger and faster and keep the expense down. He basically uses it for email, picture storage from the digital camera, and a few games like Hearts or the Solitares.

I thought about getting him this Western Digital HDD. I've had better experience with Seagate and Maxtors.

What do y'all think about this one? Or would you go with something else?

Hi Dave

The WD is a nice HDD and you wont go far wrong with it, Seagate also make a good HDDs and Sea Tools are very easy and brilliant to use, will you be replacing with a bigger HDD or adding to (2 x HDDs) ?

I won't be slaving the HDD, but replacing the existing one that's in his PC.

Go for the WD, its 250gig partition as 50gig for the OS & apps 100gig x 2 for storage, download a free partition app use it then dump it once the partitions are made

I have a ghost program (really it's my sons that works on phones and computers) that I'll ghost their existing harddrive onto my Maxtor One Touch and then put it on their new HDD.

BTW, I put in 2gig of RAM for them today, from the 256, and he loved it! I'm a hero for swapping some sticks! LoL!

P.S. Bumped my old computer up from 256 to 512, nice difference and the old build up from 256 to 1.5gig, very nice difference!

I've always had WD HDDs and never had one fail. Been pretty rough on some of them, too.

I use WD HDDs to (Raptors are the fastest mechanical HDDs out) and my external HDD is a Western Digital MyBook Essential 500GB, i would like to get a 1TB one, also i have never had a problem with WD, good sound drives !

I'm glad to hear your experiences with WD. I've only had one HDD really fail and it was a HD. However, we were treating it "roughly" so to speak and doing all kinds of stuff while I was first learning that a PC had internal parts. LoL! So it was probably all my fault. Even at that, it makes one leery. So thanks for your input.

I'm thinking of going a little larger than they'll ever need because the prices are so good on the WDs. And since they were ready for me and my son to build them a new one, we can do that a couple of years down the road now.
