What OS are you using?
I'm not familiar with Vista, but if it's XP you have to make sure it's Enabled.
Go into the Control Panel and double click System.
On the Hardware tab push the Device manager button.
Open the Disk Drives list and double click the drive in question.
At the bottom of the window there's a drop down for Enable or Disable.
Choose Enable.
Also, while you're there, go to the Policies tab and make sure the "Enable write caching on the disk" box is checked.
That should get you going.

Hiya ryan ball "Maxtor one touch III, a m8 has one"

Start these steps by disconnecting the drive from your computer >

1. Click on start, select programs.
2. Go to Maxtor folder, then right click the EasyManage shortcut and hit properties.
3. In the properties pop up window of that shortcut click Compatibility tab.
4. Under ‘Compatibility Mode’ section, check the option that says ‘Run this program in compatibility Mode for’.
5. Select Windows from the drop down menu next to it.
6. Click on ‘Apply’ and then on ‘OK’
7. Open the EasyManage link that we just made changes to from start -> Programs -> Maxtor -> EasyManage

I have a Maxtor One Touch. It's really a nice external harddrive!
