I recently purchased a D-Link Wireless N Router. I hooked it up and everything ran smoothly. When I tried to get on the internet the next day, I couldn't connect. It said there wasn't any networks available. I reset the router and everything worked fine. Next day, same problem. I have found that any time I leave the internet un-attended or without use for as little as 2 hours, I have to reset the router to get back on internet. Is this a setting I need to fix with the router itself or is there something wrong with the router? BTW, it has done this with every desktop I have hooked the router to, even at other people's houses and different internet connections. Thanks.

Next time it happens, try to connect your PC directly to the modem, that way you can tell if it is the router or your connection.

It happened to me and my Buffalo Router before, it didnt work then all of a sudden it continued working and has worked ever since.

Also if you run xp try a renewal of your IP

START > RUN> CMD

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Good Luck

When you can't connect to Internet, are you able to log into the router or does you IP address revert to APIPA, 169.254.x.x? If so, try disabling APIPA in the registry. I would log into router and change the default settings and maybe try to add you laptop's MAC address to the router configuration. If any of those steps don't work then I would guess it's an issue with the router's firmware.

Well even when I connect directly to the modem, it doesnt connect until I reset it. I have also renewed my IP bunches of times which hasnt done anything. What do you mean by "can I log into the router?"

When you say "reset" do you mean you unplugged it for a few minutes and plugged it back in or did you push a button to wipe the previous settings?

Do connect to you router's control panel:

1) Connect your PC to the router using an Ethernet cable.

2) Open a web browser and enter the address http://192.168.0.1
The default username is ‘admin’. The default password is ‘’ (leave the field blank).

3) If you have changed the password and can not remember it, you will need to reset the router to set the password back to ‘’ (leave the field blank).

To reset the router to factory default settings:

1) Ensure the router is powered on.

2) Press and hold the reset button on the rear of the device for 20 seconds.
Note: Resetting the router to factory default will erase the current configuration
settings. To re-configure your settings, log into the router as outlined above.

Then you will need to configure the router settings properly. If you need help, please list the full specs (model #, version, etc.) of the router.

Remember that for every PC that you connect to the router wirelessly, you will need to ensure you use the correct Wireless Network Name (SSID) and encryption key.

1) Use the web based user interface (as described in above) to check or
choose your wireless settings.

2) Make sure you take a note of the settings so that you can enter them into each
wirelessly connected PC.

Are you using a laptop with a built-in adapter or a desktop machine with an external adapter? If so, what are the full specs for it? What is the Operating System you are running? Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

The next time it does this, please write down what the lights on the front are doing and what color they are and post them here.

Thanks for that detailed answer. Yes, by resetting it, I mean I unplugged it for a few minutes and plugged it back in. Next time I have a chance to sit down and try those things, I will let you know what happens. Would it matter then when I have taken my router to friends houses, I have renamed the Wireless Network to something different?

You are welcome.

Losing power to a router does not reset it. So. once you set the router's settings, it will hold them unless you push and hold the reset button.

You can move it all you want, however, you would want to write down the network name you assign to it and the password. Then you would plug the router in and not change anything.

Next, you would go to the computer's wireless adapter and click the connect button and it will ask you for the password and/or the network name (SSID) and then it would connect and hold that information.

There would be no need to keep changing the information on the router or the adapter, unless you want to. Every time that computer "found" that wireless network, it would automatically connect...unless you changed a setting.

But to answer your question, you can change the settings all you want. You can name the network anything and use whatever you want for a password. I would change all default information to keep a neighbor for taking over your connection.

Any computer in range will pick up the router's signal and when they see the name as a default SSID, they would know that you have not setup security. Then they would simply log into it through a web browser (the information I posted yesterday) and change the name and password and lock you out of your own network. Which, if this does happen, you could reset the router and be back to square one.

Once you provide the routers model number and version, I can provide more specific information to the possible causes of your issue.

Okay, the router is at my house now. And it does disconnect after long periods of inactivity.

I don't see a reset button on it. Edit: I found the reset button!

The router is a D-Link Model DIR-615. Maybe that will help.

If everything I have posted is set up correctly...you need to update the firmware version.

I will need to know what revision you have to suggest anything more.

Revision A

Revision B

Please flash the firmware and give it a go.

Please post what firmware version you have now and after the flash.

It's A1, but I haven't done anything with the router yet. I'll get that lazy MoMan to help!

Is this a big security issue besides them being able to lock out our network? I see lots of unsecure wireless networks when I fire up my laptop (I have both a Sprint wireless card and a wireless connection).
