Do you guys think we will see a large difference, such as going from single to dual-core? From the benchmarks I've seen, the C2Q looks like it really packs a punch over the X6800 C2D.

It depends on the application. We probably won't see much until Vista is out and working in full force and DirectX 10 is out with video cards and games to match it. The next versions of Photoshop and other resource intensive programs will also probably be more geared to a multiple processor setup, therefore giving the Core 2 Quad's nice advantages. However, I think when they immediatly come out, they won't be worth it as a) you have to have a lot more RAM to run them optimally and b) their price point will negate any performance gain.

We'll have to wait and see though .

I don't expect much from it. True, it has two other cores, but, as was mentioned above, there's not really anything that can utilize them.

I'm looking forward to AMD's entry into the melee. Yeah, I'm a fanboy, but I am one for a reason.

Quad Core is in full use now and AMD are behind ATM, Vista "well " lets see how Windows 7 works, many apps utilise Quad tech today and I'm all for progress

If it's anything like the improvement of Duo over single it should be fabulous!

Sepulchre, bouncing THIS off YOU here, especially:

* Your thoughts, as a fellow designer, are appreciated here... for accuracies' sake @ least!

(... & yes, it's largely about this very question from folks here, same topic/idea/question in that one (but, I went "over-geek" on it I think))...

APK

P.S.=> No, not as far as mutexes/semaphores for message passing/processing/blocking, but, pretty close... still, I think the point's there! adb22791's here's idea is much like mine on this subject... depends on what you do, BUT, I think we utilize it pretty well today, just based on multithreaded app design (what I call "implicitly SMP ready code" vs. what I call "explicitly SMP ready code" (SetProcessAffinity API calls & self=scheduled code + CPU detections etc.))... apk

Sounds pretty right on, in my experience. Though I'm far less knowledgeable about hardware and OS stuff than Cat or Ian, I can vouch for the mgt attitudes you describe. In fact, I worked for a company that purposefully left bugs in and then charged the customer to fix them. I would have left them sooner for such unethical practices but they paid top rates. I couldn't take it when they wanted me to lie about it, though.
The apps I'm familiar with also do a Lot of reads and writes with a large number of concurrent users so speed was of the essence and . . .

Ok, we have a thunderstorm moving in so I have to go and unplug. Maybe I can elaborate later.

Good, because there IS a last thing I could tell her, but imo? It's a SMALL book to write out!

(I.E.-> Perfmon.exe usage & turning those performance counters (that store iirc, in the "hidden registry hive" for temp ops such as this, HKEY_DYN_DATA) on/off as needed using reskit tool, exctrlst.exe (sp?))

... & monitoring them for hours/days to find "bottlenecks" etc. (there is ALWAYS one too, nature of the beast - NO getting around it, just physics).

However, as LONG as that is even presently?

It IS as "accurate" as I am able to describe it, w/out going into "TOTAL GEEK SPEAK" (programming talk, mutex/semaphore flags etc. et al).

Me too, I used to be way, WAY into that, in my fieldtech days... now? Only when I go to buy... & only then, once every 4-5 yrs. (when I get my monies worth outta stuff I have, today, & usually more than DOUBLE my power once I buy, then, vs. the system I am then replacing).

Ah, I can SORT OF, almost, see their point (TO A POINT only though)... it is about delivery schedules & satisfying venture capitalists &/or departmental budgets too...

Yup, seen that little "trick" before too... intermittent ones ONLY, so they did NOT show up, off the bat, for everyone & in every usually used feature!

Yes, lol... I too, understand "paid silence", because not being silent about it "got my head chopped off" a couple times... (fired once even, for showing a network was open to attack & that their network admin had setup an antivirus improperly & we were RIDDLED by Trend Micro being out of date by over 6 months on signatures updates because of his incompetency @ the OS + softwares level (good hardware/router head though)).

Imo, the "good boss" again, has to be "ALL HATS ON HIS HEAD" & cannot be some "MCSE/CCNA etc." only... a balanced man on both software + hardware levels if NOT programming too (the "final evolution" imo).

Too many, aren't even as good as their network techs (let alone admins & coders)

Yup, in a meeting the dolt I am speaking about tried to put me down & I pointed out his mistakes on setting up the antivirus wrong... on purpose, in retaliation... I was BROUGHT IN to help create secure code (via ASP.NET/VB.NET & also @ the network level too... which was great, until this happened, & then? I got "NUKED"... well, it would NOT surprise me if one day their customers find out about a "few things", you know? LOL!)

I wouldn't though... they'll screw it up themselves soon enough, if not already on those notes.

You're DEFINTELY a "DB man" then... no doubt!

No problem... it's great to meet a SUPREME GEEK, lol, so-to-speak!
