I have an Abit AV8 mobo and on the motherboard there is a small square with the number 4.8 lit up on it. Whats that?

Where is the LED situated? On that motherboard, near the bottom-right most corner (under the memory banks), there are 2 LED's which indicate PSU and system state (on/off). Are these the ones you see?

Ah, that

If there is ever an error with the POST (Power On Self Test, which does stuff like memory checking etc), then it'll give you a number you can look up to troubleshoot your problem (they should be listed in your manual).

It could also be the stepping .. for users who overclock? Though 4.8 would be a bit extreme unless you have a sweet little intel cpu.

My Abit mobo also had the LED indicator.

That is used to help troubleshoot errors. It should be listed in your motherboard technical manual what the error codes are. If you are missing your manual, it can be downloaded from Abits site:
Universal abit USA - Product Manual

you'll find the diagnostic LEDs along with two SATA connectors powered by the VIA southbridge, which provide the AV8 with its RAID functionality
