I've been thinking of getting an external harddrive for a couple of reasons. One is to move large files between un-networked computers and two is for storage of backups.

What's your experience with external harddrives? Any recommendations?

I've thought about getting this Maxtor OneTouch since I've had a smaller Maxtor external and several Maxtor internals. Thoughts? Also, I like the USB 2.0 and it's a 3.5" drive.

Yeah, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 250GB. It works for me pretty good.

That makes me feel better. Now I definitely know where to come when I have questions.

How's the transfer speed?

Well it makes full use of the USB 2.0. I couldn't tell you exact figures, but it isn't slow.

I've been told two different things on the speed of the USB cable, and they're totally opposite.

One says that it's fast, like being mounted right in the case. And the other says that it is a cable and slows save speeds down. I don't know, yet.

It's not going to be as fast as internal hard drive, but it's not slow enough to be problematic. I suppose it depends on how much data you're moving and how often. If you're going to want to shift 20GB every day, an external drive (be it on USB 2.0 or Firewire) is not for you.

My everyday usage will still be handled by my SanDisk Flash drive. The exernal will handle the occassional large files and backups.

Gee, I'm waiting on a paycheck so I can order it!!!

It came while I was out of town! I've got it unboxed, but I haven't tried it out yet. Very soon though!

On Black Friday, I got a 250GB My Book Western Digital External HD. One of the best buys i've made^^ It was $59...retail $149 I think... I love it, i'm moving all of my old CD's to it. 7200RPM...always nice^^ It is nicely designed so you could have it sideways or upways. Nice enough to put it in a bookshelf =p

An external hard drive is going to be my next purchase. I have my machine, and two kids machines at home...need to back up. I also have over just under 45k pics on my hdd that definately need backing up since about half of them are scans of pics that don't exist anymore!!
