What do you consider the easiest way to password lock or secure an individual folder?

For example, I have a folder with all my information for the forum software. I want is locked so now one can access this folder without a password.

Thanks, Cat. I found Cryptainer the other day when looking through the Cypherix website and also found another one similar to it called Navajoh Lock (I was a previous beta tester for it).

The thing that I didn't like is that it makes one vault/safe/folder to hold and make invisible whatever files that you don't want others opening. I would like to have one that would lock an individual file instead of always grouping.

I think the NL makes up to 24 vaults, which is probably plenty, but I'm still wondering if there is an easy way to lock individual files or folders without grouping them all together.

Have you run upon any like that?

Dave

I sent an email to Microsoft about password protecting a folder/file. Their response was that it could not be done unless running NT. Windows 2000, XP, and Vista will not password lock and encrypt folders.

However, they said that I could compress the folder, or zip it, and add a password on the compressed or zipped file so it could only be decompressed or unzipped via the password.

I haven't tried this yet, but I will later on.

Going to check out that link, Cat.

Odd ! i have used a few password lock and encryption programs with Windows XP Pro, Black and Ultimate, one quite well known one is Folder Lock retail program here > Folder Lock - Reviews and free Folder Lock downloads at Download.com and from a very well known site. Still some M$ personnel do seem to live on another planet !

You can zip or RAR individual files with a password lock. I've used that method for a long time, but I don't know how strong the encryption is.

I'm going to try out both of Cat's suggested programs. I already like that AxCrypt is integrated with Window's Explorer and the right click menu. Also, most of the programs that I have found and test don't lock an individual folder, but they create a vault or safe or whatever to put in the folder/files that you want locked up.

I want to be able to lock an individual file and it not be sharing some folder (just a personal preference). I'll tell you what I think after trying them later on.
