Hi Rajan, I split your question off from the introduction thread so that more might see it and reply to it.

I've been involved with several new forums, from tech fields to webmastering to other niche fields (and even general forums), and they all had one big thing in common: they all had a beginning date and were small when first started.

There are several things that need to fall in place for a forum to grow:
  1. Time: it takes time for the forum to be listed on search engines and for people to find out about them.
  2. Committed Forum Leaders: the forum needs a staff that is committed to helping the forum grow and to grow their own individual forums.
  3. Committed members: each forum needs a group of individual members that want to see the community grow and will help by posting threads and replies.
  4. Advertising: this refers to all types of advertising, including paid advertising and word of mouth by those members that enjoy the forum. Word of mouth can be more important than other means of advertising.
  5. Time: though I mentioned it before, this is the biggest thing needed to help a forum to grow. A baby does not become an adult overnight; the same goes for a small forum to become a large forum.
  6. Other stuff: this has only been a short synopsis of some of the things needed to grow a forum. There is much, much more to making one grow!
If anyone has more comments and opinions, please include them here!
