I am keen to build myself a computer of which makes use of an USB port, for the use of connecting a USB pen drive up to it.

Awnsers I seek are,

#1, What is the USB outlet pin outs

#2, I need to understand how to operate the pen drive, one that is formatted for FAT.

Information to web sites with data would be great.

If you're building a computer and most of it today is just match the colors/places for plugging stuff in, you'll only need to add the USB port and the USB flash drive or pen drive will plug into that port. Or is that making it too simplistic.

I borrowed a diagram for a VOIP phone that had the following pinouts:
  • Pin 1, VBUS, red
  • Pin 2, D-, white
  • Pin 3, D+, green
  • Pin 4, GND, black
  • Shell, shield, drain
I hope that was helpful.

Dave

The easiest way would be to consult your motherboard's manual. Even if you use a motherboard from a pre-built, you can usually find diagrams on the manufacturer's website.

How does a computer operate a pen drive?

What is the chatter that goes on between the computer and a pen drive?

Eg, Does the computer just send to the pen drive, " I want to load X file" and then does the pen drive just respond by sending to the computer the details of that file?

Or, must the computer operate the pen drive directly?

My plans are to build a computer type device from scratch - I need a bit of skill in Binary, and how each of those off the shelf Computer chips do.

Having a P.C. style motherboard does not suit what I plan on doing.

Thanks for that information.

I understand what GND is, and have a fair idea on what the Shell, Shield, Drain is, but could anyone provide me with details about what the other three do?

Just a little sidenote: You can use the multi-quote function instead of making posts right after each other (like below).

I'm not exactly sure what you are getting at with that, but the pen drive is only a storage device. The computer/processor is what provides the information to be stored and retrieved.

Can you explain more of what you're planning?

Gee, I don't know about those. I just copied that down from a VOIP diagram.

Maybe someone else will be able to help you more with some of this stuff!
