I bought this Toshiba DVD burner, and it sucked ! said it could burn at 8 times but only did @ 4 times untill I bought a Sony

are you sure you didn't buy 4x media dvds? lol

And a lot of the time, burners will burn DVD+R's and DVD-R's at a different max speed.
