Here is an interesting article about the speed differences between Firewire and SATA drives.
Larry's Monthly Newsletter - Dec 2006 / Jan 2007 The article is geared towards video editing (FinalCut Pro on a Mac) but offers interesting study on the speed differences and gives other facts that most will learn by.

I use a Rino That runs firewire 800.
Usually they compare USB 2.0 with firewire 400. Firewire is the way to go with a external HD. I use it with ProTools. *Figuratively speaking firewire is a tad slower then USB, but since when where speed focused analyzes correct? G3 vs Pentium 2 "just saying. Weirdly my external features Firewire and USB. |

I just bought a 500GB and an enclosure. So far I'm really happy with it
 My main 250GB now has more then 10GB free lol. |
