there's been debate over speed of the latest quad cores from both manufactures but i had an intel in my last machine and getting one in my new one - best place to ask is the computer shop you buy your parts from, that's your source of knowledge

If it isn't for gaming then it doesn't matter. AMD tend to be a bit cheaper though. Get a dual core also. Either an AMD Athlon 64 X2 or a Core 2 Duo.

A quad core might be too much for you, plus you won't really make sure of it.

Processor: Intel core 2 Duo E8400 (Though might have to use Intel Pentium E2160, which is about £50)

I was intending to get a good motherboard and get a case that fitted.

I think something like "eg" > This would be a good buy, P35 chipset, a 38 or 48 you will be looking at a 3 figure price tag, the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 will support the two CPUs you suggested and has all that is required if you want to upgrade, also the chipset is rock solid
