Well, got any more info? Processor & speed? More RAM would help. Also, what do you want to do with it?

Remove any programs that run in the background that you don't need is the first step. Another thing you could do is switch the theme to the classic windows 2000 theme and disable any fancy/special effects. Whilst this doesn't improve performance too much it gives the appearance that it's running fast and believe it or not, it makes a difference! I've done it on my dads laptop which is what I am using, also pretty crappy and it's made a difference.

If it's for gaming, tell us what graphics adapter you have, perhaps you could do a bit of tweaking if you're up to it... Plus for some games you can maybe download a config.

And like the previous poster said, tell us the rest of your specs!

Hi ryan

First thing i would do is go to the Motherboard makers site and see what CPU and Ram upgrade it can handle, thats if you want to change anything. Windows XP Pro has a lot of Cr*p you wont need, a few things to do > http://www.thenewtech.com/forums/ope...ed-up-xp-3785/ and as has been said get rid of anything you don't need, also reboot the BIOS "take the MOBO Battery out for 5 mins, often helps" have a look at task manager and see what is using your resources, instead of using MSCONFIG use SERVICES.MSC for turning of system functions because if you turn something off and XP needs it XP will turn it on again cute Computer hope you have fun with it

P3 800MHz + 362MB Ram?
I think the easy way is increase your ram because Window use a lot of ram so if you use other program (office, IE, FF, etc..), it will run slowly.

Cat & others... want a SINGLE FILE that is guaranteed (& I mean that) that will boost your online speed, by a COUNTRY MILE (& secure you online too, guaranteed, vs. many online threats)?

EMail me, here -> apk4776239@hotmail.com

* YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS, promise...

It helps HUGELY in surfing HTML data pages (which most are anyhow on websites anyways), but it's of no help speeding up binary downloads though (things like program updates etc.).

APK

P.S.=> It's called a HOSTS file, but this is a CUSTOMIZED one...

I.E. -> it blocks out adbanners (yes, webmasters don't like it, most likely, but IF you pay for your linetime out of your own pockets like I do? You want every BIT of speed you are entitled to for your monies)...

E.G.-> Using these (they come from BSD UNIX originally, when MS ripped off their IP stack no less for windows, as BSD is truly the "best in the biz" for things IP)?

Well - you don't waste time calling out to adbanner servers, loading in their datastreams, & processing their code, period... huge boost in & of itself, but... there's more (far more):

You can additionally speed up access to your FAV SITES too... simply by putting their IPAddress <-> URL equation into them using notepad.exe (after you "ping" them to find out the IP addy). This way, you don't waste time in roundtrip URL -> IPaddress resolution from DNS servers (which have been getting "DNS Poisoned" quite a lot lately too PLUS, if your DNS from your ISP/BSP goes down? YOU STILL GET TO YOUR FAV SITES ANYHOW!)

This keeps you safe too, because many adbanners today are being hijacked by the "Russian Business Network" & I see results of that almost daily for clients I service (from home/end users up to corporate clients w/ infested networks).

Easy to install too! & easy to edit + add to (via notepad & ping usage)

(1 file copy -> C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc , overwriting your old one, & that only has a single entry of 127.0.0.1 localhost)...

Trust me on this one... want more speed AND security? WRITE ME, I will send it back in an email attachment...

Heh, I can't WAIT to hear you guys go "WOW"...

In fact, here is just one example from others that have used it:

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpo...5&postcount=34

Just as "evidence thereof"... apk

No problem!

* Enjoy it... You will!

APK

P.S.=> Only thing I am wondering is, IS if VISTA keeps the HOSTS file in the same location as Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003 do...

(& this, will answer that, for me (when you save it to the location of C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc ))

Cat, you should get a question of "Do you wish to overwrite" type stuff, when you save it there... & IF you do? It is in place, correctly... Windows 2000 users have to reboot to use it, XP/Server 2003/VISTA users don't have to, incidentally!

(I am pretty sure it is still that way in VISTA though, but, let's find out!)... apk
