From a bunch of friends in college Ive heard them saying that its packed with some really nice features - a great improvement on Windows XP...

What do you think of it?

Well, it certainly is an improvement. I think it's probably the best "next release" they've ever had.

A lot of people just look at the new fancy GUI and think it's automatically better, but honestly, the core system has been improved quite a bit from what I can see. Though I am disappointed that some of the major features that were supposed to be part of this release didn't make it (like the new file system). At least we can catch them later and install them easily.

MS is taking a new approach to the way they develop their software, every feature is a kind of "module" that can just be plugged in. This means that there will be less major releases (ie. Win 98 -> Win XP), but more minor releases that will add new features (ie. that new file system). So I hope this new technique will help reduce the number of bugs, decrease the time between new feature releases, and up the community moral towards Microsoft.

I tried it for a while, and it may be very buggy, but there is a noticable difference in quality and speed.

The new GUI is just a gelled XP.

I did remove Vista becuase of the bugs. But as a modular OS, very neat. I just hope MS allow certain modules to be open-source.

lol That would really suck, not only for them. But I don't think anything can be even close to Windows ME crapness.

I don't dislike MS, but do you really think there would be a chance that it would be open-source?

I highly doubt anything to be released as part of the Windows feature-set will be open source.

MS does release source sometimes, but nothing like this.

No chance of them releasing it open-source... thats just wishful thinking.

So what is it like? I've been wanting to hear from someone who has installed it firsthand, other than what Mik said. They say it eats a lot of the memory. Unless you have your system running in the optimum/best specs, that really isn't a problem.

Oh, MS modules being available as open-source? Not possible if they plan on releasing updates via modules. I assume updates are part of the retail price.
