Vigile writes "Multi-GPU technology from both NVIDIA and ATI has long been dependent on many factors including specific motherboard chipsets and forcing gamers to buy similar GPUs within a single generation. A new company called Lucid Logix is showing off a product that could potentially allow vastly different GPUs to work in tandem while still promising near-linear scaling on up to four chips. The HYDRA Engine is dedicated silicon that dissects DirectX and OpenGL calls and modifies them directly to be distributed among the available graphics processors. That means the aging GeForce 6800 GT card in your closet might be useful once again and the future of one motherboard supporting both AMD and NVIDIA multi-GPU configurations could be very near."

AHA! Now, THIS? This IS cool...

Personaly, I think it'd be great to not have to toss out say, an older PCI Express compliant card, & to be able to "pool it" with another card type (I don't know HOW this will work though - most boards have either AGP, or PCI Express the past 3-4 yrs. now for video, but, rarely BOTH)).

... & most vidcards are 1 slot type (PCI-Express) or, the other (AGP), if they are "the fast(est) kind(s)" that is, of late.'

(& though I don't follow mobos like I used to? Most mobos, say mine for just a single example, only have 1 PCI-Express 16 slot, not 2... though, this may vary lately (my boards a 2006 yr. model, & newer ones MAY carry multiple PCI-x16 slots (mine has PCI-x4 & PCI-x1, but not dual x16 ones))

Still, very cool idea.

P.S.=> I think I'm going to have to read the article in depth. I had it in my "instant open tabs group" in Opera from yesterday, but "I put down the PC" yesterday evening & went out instead... to get out with humanity & "unplug", so... no time like the present (off to /. to check out the specifics of this & what kind of slot types can be used etc. (probably all, but you'd have to have a multiple set of say, PCI-Express slots most likely to pull it off I would guess @ "max possible full speed" I'd guess... well, we'll see!))... apk
