Naznarreb writes "CERN announced today that the first attempt to circulate a beam through the Large Hadron Collider will be on September 10th, 2008. You can read the press release here. They also announced the event will be webcast live. According to the release, they're just planning run a few tests laps, not smash any particles, so the world won't be ending quite yet." And despite that September 10th date, according to the BBC, "On 9 August, protons will be piped through LHC magnets for the first time."

The ONLY thing that "scares the heck outta me", about this thing?

Is that they plan on generating "singularities" (black holes)... & they had best quintuple check any "magnetic bottles/fields void of charge" (or, whatever they use for containment) they use, & the software + hardware surrounding (controlling & monitoring) that, & also make SURE it's massively "redundant" too.

Last thing we need, imo, is the 'suck the solar system into a black-hole'...

Especially not nowadays - just when I personally feel we're on the "verge of great things" in science (way more than even this past century, which saw more great advances probably than any others prior to it)...

I'll tell you RIGHT NOW, that the guys that "pull the trigger" on THAT particular "little experiment"? Will probably be feeling like the folks that triggered the 1st Atomic Explosion... worrying they'd 'fry the atmosphere off the planet' & what-not (I know I would feel thus)...
