Recently, I had to purchase a new mobo because my computer was rebooting spontaneously. The mobo I purchased is for a socket 478 PIV processor and I'm using the same power supply as before. Once I swapped the mobo's, I've been hearing a noise when turning the PC on. It sounds like it's coming from the fan but I'm not sure. Is there any way, without using a multimeter, that i can find out if the issue is with the power supply or with the heatsink on the CPU? And if it is the heatsink, how do I fix that?

You can buy a power supply tester for around $20.00us which is very easy to use. You can change out the CPU heatsink/fan fairly easy if that is the problem.

Does it still reboot after swapping the MoBo?

Is the machine acting up or just making a noise?

After installing the new mobo, the computer works fine but once in awhile when i turn it on it will make a whirring noise. I know it's not the HD. Are heatsinks proprietary to the CPU or can they be interchanged?

You can buy a new heatsink and/or fan and change it out. They need to match the CPU, but they are separate to the CPU and made to change out. You would look for a CPU cooler compatible with socket 478.

This is one example for $9.99

When you swapped the Mobo, did you remove the heatsink from the CPU and use new thermal compound?

Is the machine overheating?

No the heatsink did not come off but i did add a litle more thermal paste before inserting CPU onto new mobo. The computer isn't overheating but like I said it makes a noise sometimes when I turn it on.

The noise is most likely made by a fan. Keep an eye on your temperatures. If the fan starts to fail, it will stop spinning and your PC will run hotter than usual.

Also check to make sure you don't have any wires rubbing against any of your fans ... that could also be the source of your noise.

You can try removing the new mobo and srewing it back tightly paying attention to the corner screws and making sure the mobo is lying correctly on the screwing panel. By the way is the whole casing alittle bit shaky when you hear that noise?
