After taking a quick look at my applications folder and seeing how much software I have actually obtained in just a few years for my OSX and realizing how little I actually use, or perhaps hardly use ..
.. perhaps it is time to think about selling the licenses (if possible) for a handful of them.

Ever decided to just sell off 50% of your software - even if you only get a handful of cash in return for it? It's a nice clean up, you're not using it anyway right? And you at least get something out of it : Money.

Thing is today hun just about any software can be acquired for free, contrary to what government may like us to believe Torrent Sites are getting bigger and many have there own security dealing with spyware / virus etc, download managers have incoming / outgoing encryption so ISPs cant throttle the feed, Gens, Patches and Cracks are been made by pros. OS + Apps can now be had for £0, the Net is near impossible to police.

I have thought about selling some of my software that I'm not using. One bad thing is that if it's a year old or more, there's lots of updates out and it's almost out-dated.

Regardless of the amount of torrent users, there are still people that want and need legal copies of software. Getting free software for home use is about like burning a copy of a movie for home use; I don't think most people are really concerned about that. It's when you start using the software for a business or making money that the getting non-freeware free becomes really bad.......... but that's just my opinion.

I've got a bunch of old programs that are still on floppies. Don't know why I've kept them since I only have one very old machine that even uses them. Remember Wing Commander, Blake Stone, After Dark, Word Star, to mention a few? LoL!

You might do better just to make someone a super deal on them or just give them away. I've given away some older programs just so someone could be using them (and yes, they were removed from my machine).

I think it would be nice to give someone "if they cant afford it new" say a young person or an unemployed person software you don't need, how can a person with little money get Adobe CS ? maybe you have CS2 & 3 give them CS2 "I'm sure it would make there day "

I gave my CAD program to a guy that just needed to start out with CAD. It was a good learning tool even though it was an older version.

Helping out like that helps other people and they can start learning. If they want to upgrade, then it's up to them on how they do it.
