Not too techy, but you have a nice post about security. So, are you more leaned about the security side of computers?

In the last two years I came to depend upon a certain computer store for good information on what was the best firewall and Anti-Virus. Thus I ended up with pc-Cillion Internet Security Suite by Trend Micro. But recently a set of trojans and other such Malware walked right through the door with no problems at all. This happened to a doctor friend of mine that I recommended pc-Cillon to. Man was I embarrassed! Well, I decided not to take the opinion of one man and went to the Internet to find the answers on my own. Took me quite awhile to find these sites, but now at least I can say I am working off of factual information rather than one man's opinion. I have been very concerned about Privacy and Internet security over the last few years because I was the victim of a keylogger or trojen of some type that resulted in the loss of over 1K of e-gold being stolen from me. Unbelievably bad feeling to know that someone is in your computer stealing from you and there is nothing you can do about it short of a reformat. And if you reformat how can you be sure that the same thing will not happen again. I got into encrypted virtual drives (BestCrypt by Jetico), Encrypted password storage programs (Roboform), Encrypted and Private e-mail providers (CryptoHeaven) and other security measures to protect privacy and finances. I have been beat up, but I have come through with more knowledge to protect myself more efficiently. But I am nobody special. Just tired of well meaning opinions which can make you vulnerable to the crooks of the world. I guess you could say that I have gone overboard these last couple of years in trying to maintain computer security. Not because I learned about it in school. Maybe the school of hard knocks. I guess I am more into it then the average Joe. Glad you liked the post.

Though it was a costly experience, it seems that you have learned alot. I don't think there's any "over board" when it comes to computer security!

I attended a meeting several years back and watched a presentation on asset protection. It was very well done. When the break came the presenter went to the bathroom and I watched a man go to the unattended laptop, stick a flash drive into the unit and download the data associated with the presentation. All without permission. From that lesson I realized the value of an encrypted virtual drive. Now whenever I go somewhere, my computer stores all my valuable data in the Encrypted container. It has a 20 minute life span on it so that if I walk away and forget to close it, it will automatically close by itself. Yes, my lessons come hard. But it is good to have an understanding of these things so that we can protect our intellectual property and data from attack, theft or corruption.

Do you also work with HijackThis and other malware/spyware removal programs? We're always looking for members for our security team (especially those that have some qualification like ASAP).

Hi Dave,

I have no experience with HiJack This. Though I hear it is a great program. I am more of a nontechnical power user without some of the knowledge needed to really go after viruses and trojans. I know that the Panda Root Kit Remover is the best out there right now. It will decloak a ton of viruses and trojans. But trying to identify a virus/trojan is my problem. No experience. Not that I would not be interested. I just would not be of much help for lack of knowledge. Sorry.

Keep building up that experience and knowledge base! Of course, I hope you don't build up the experience the hard way; we've both been there and don't want to go there again!
