"The Terminator"

"The machines rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire. Their war to exterminate mankind had raged for decades, but the final battle would not be fought in the future. It would be fought here, in our present... tonite"

* Forgot how "profound" & terrifying this film's overall concept, really is... especially since I think we're on the verge of such creations, maybe @ most, 20-30 yrs. away, tops.

My fav. line(s) from it (from my fav. character in it):

----------------------------------------------------

"I'm here to help you. I'm Reese - Sgt. TechCom vn38416, assigned to protect you: You've been TARGETTED FOR TERMINATION!"

----------------------------------------------------

"LISTEN, & understand: That terminator is out there! It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with... it doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, AND IT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT STOP, EVER (until you are DEAD!)"

----------------------------------------------------

"Nobody even knew who started it! It was the machine, Sara... Defense network computers (new, powerful): Hooked into EVERYTHING, trusted to run it all... They say it got smart - a new order of intelligence - Then it saw ALL people as a threat, not just the ones on the other side (It decided our fate in a microsecond... extermination)"

----------------------------------------------------

"You still don't get it, do you? He'll find her. That's what he does - THAT'S ALL HE DOES! You can't stop him - He'll wade thru you, reach down her throat, & pull her F'ing HEART OUT!"

----------------------------------------------------

AWESOME!

APK

P.S.=> "Phased plasma rifles (w/ 40 watt range)", & all - inclusive of "supercomputers" as powerful (via true AI) as "SKYNET", & also literal terminators (if not more terrifying things, like dangerous "nano-machines") also...

This stuff's coming, because IF we can imagine it in film/literature? I figure @ most, it's 50 yrs. away... apk

"Hard Times"

* A classic (from the 1970's, believe-it-or-not (some of the worst films ever were made in this period, imo @ least)) flick, starring one of the better actors from that timeframe, the late (but, great) Mr. Charles Bronson.

APK

P.S.=> Picked this up shopping because I was ALWAYS looking for this film, & it's one of the better ones from my youth I can recall... apk

"Vanilla Sky"

Starring Tom Cruise (who was born in this city, one that is CHOCK FULL of literally, "vanilla skies", ala the painting by Monet)

See - When I first heard about this film, I disregarded it, as it was billed as a "love story" ONLY (untrue really, as it's more than THAT (& many times? Love Story type films?? They really tend to 'depress me' a bit too much)), which it IS, but far more than just that... by far!

So - "abres los ojos"... see it!

"A new form in me began to take shape: I planned my re-emergence, like the Normandy invasion - (sophia, sophia, so-phi-a) I'll just say it - I did my homework. I read EVERY memo, Thomas Tipp was right - people WILL read again. I attended the monthly board meeting, of the 7 dwarves, by video hookup. Oh baby, this was war - I grew stronger in ways I never knew before... & on Dec. 5th, My planes filled the sky - the return of David Aames Jr., citizen dildo"

The MAIN character, "David Aames"? My kind of guy... been there myself (sort of, as to his situation(s) in the film, in MANY of them no less... in a way, haven't we ALL?)

----

* So... If you haven't seen it? DO!

(It's truly an AWESOME film, conceptually (to begin with), but also in how it was done, overall, high production values bigtime)

(An "e.g." many folks tend to overlook, for instance/example? Well - Nancy Wilson of the band "HEART" did a GREAT job on the background tracks she did... she's a master of beautiful creations w/ the acoustic guitar, bigtime - her work massively improved the 'ambiance' of this film imo!)).

APK

P.S.=> Heh, loved these scenes/quotes from it too:
  • (Ding, ding, ding)"THIS... IS A REVOLUTION... OF THE MIND!"(Ding, ding, ding)
  • "They laughed @ Jules Verne, too..."
  • "I'm Frozen, You're dead... & I love you"
  • "TECH SUPPORT!!!"
  • "The little things in life - there's NOTHING bigger!"
(That last saying especially, imo @ least, so SO true!)

Hey - man, you've got to see it, if only for those moments alone (this isn't just a "Sci-Fi" film, OR, a love story only - but more than that, by far)... apk

Well, haven't got it, YET, but... aim to, today:

ROUNDERS

Starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton, & Gretchen Mol (plus John Malkovitch, Famke Janssen, Martin Landau, & John Turturro)

* MY KIND OF FILM (non "Sci-Fi" too, IF you can believe that, lol!) & yes, though I have seen it a few times (lol, more than a few)? It gets added to my collection of what I consider are "classics" or future ones...

APK

P.S.=> Fav. lines/scenes from it:

--------------------

Matt Damon: "Well, you feelin' satisfied NOW, Teddy? 'Cuz I can go on 'bustin' you up', all nite..."

Teddy KGB/John Malkovitch: "Nyet, nyet... He BEAT me, 'straight up': Pay him (pay that man, his money)..."

&

Matt Damon: "People insist on calling it luck: 1st prize @ the world series of poker is a MILLION BUCKS - Does it have my name on it? I dunno... (but, I'm gonna find out...)"

--------------------

** Man - GOOD stuff! See it, by all means, if you haven't before...

... &, she's filmed in that "CITY OF CITIES", N.Y. City (of which I was a proud resident @ one point, no place like it on earth)... apk

"GATTACA"

Starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman (the film they met & got married after no less iirc), & Jude Law

PLOT SYNOPSIS:

Gattaca (1997) - PG13

Set in the future, aerospace firm Gattaca Corp. has, among other achievements, developed a process to analyze citizens DNA to determine their societal ranking. But when Gattaca employee Vincent Freeman discovers his congenital heart condition might prevent him from traveling to space on a mission, he assumes the identity of former super athlete, now paraplegic, Jerome Morrow in hopes that Morrow's flawless genes will allow Vincent to achieve his life long dream of traveling to outer space.

* Awesome film, but, made me sad @ times... it REALLY 'got to me', let's put it THAT way... damn near put tears in my eyes in fact.

----

(AND, this is yet another film, where the musical background IMMENSELY adds to the atmosphere of it all, also (big fan of that here - as it "helps set the tone/mood" etc. et al)).

If you have not ever seen this? Do: I can assure you, it's a great one.

I.E.-> It's a film about trying your very best/giving it EVERYTHING you've got, & overcoming the odds (WITH some help)... imo!

APK

P.S.=> Fav. quote(s) - from my 4 fav. exchanges in the film, & 2 soliliguoys:

Ernest Borgnine: "When you clean the glass Vincent? Don't clean it TOO well!"

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "What do you mean?"

Ernest Borgnine: "You MIGHT get ideas!"

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "Yea, but if the glass is clean? You'll be able to see me better when I'm on the OTHER SIDE!"

Ernest Borgnine: "Ha!"

----

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "Do you have ANY IDEA, what it TOOK, to get in here?"

Anton: "How are you doing this, Vincent?"

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "You wanna know HOW I did it, Anton? I NEVER SAVED ANYTHING FOR THE SWIM BACK!"

----

Jude Law (the TRUE Jerome Morrow): "I got the better end of the deal: I only lent you my body - you lent me your dream..."

----

Doctor Lamar (good man this guy): "Have I ever told you about my son, Jerome? I never did tell you about my son did I?? He's a BIG fan of yours..."

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "Just remember: That I was as good as any & better than most... I could've gone UP & back, & nobody would've been the wiser!"

Doctor Lamar: "He wants to apply here - unfortunately, my son's not ALL that they promised, but then... who KNOWS what he could do... right? For 'future reference'? Right-handed men, don't hold it with their left - just one of those things (You're going to miss YOUR flight... Vincent...)"

----

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "I was never more certain of how far away I was from my goal, than when I was standing right beside it..."

Ethan Hawke (Jerome Morrow): "For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess: I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it! Of course, 'they' say, every atom was once part of a star (maybe I'm not leaving... maybe, I'm going home...)"

Well, just "popping by" to post about a few GOOD flicks I've seen recently (one I even asked about here earlier, in "JUMPER"):

Here goes!

----

JUMPER:

GOOD stuff! I was surprised, especially @ Hayden Christiansen's performance (guy's coming along as a "thespian" imo!) - if you like Sci-Fi oriented films, this one's pretty good entertainment, by all means!

----

The RUINS:

This one surprised me - I didn't think it'd be that good, but, it was surprisingly good entertainment also, &, an interesting premise: Especially how they tried to "tie it into a speculative history" of a certain tribe.

----

(& lastly? My FAV of the lot of the films I've seen recently!)

HANCOCK:

Will Smith continues to surprise in this one! He's done some decent Sci-Fi in the past (Independence Day, I AM LEGEND (excellent), I ROBOT (great too), MIB I & II, etc. et al) - but, this one "got to me", because I felt for Ole' Hancock (rejected, but, still continues to "do the right thing" (sometimes, to "NOT SO GOOD EFFECTS" though, but, not intentionally))

You'll like this one, if you haven't seen it, imo @ least - I can't understand why the critics didn't think much of it, but, to each his own (cliche but true)...

(Charlize Theron does a great job too ("spaghetti madness", lol!))

Anyhow... I'd recommend any one of these for a GOOD "sci-fi movie nite" to anybody - enjoy them!

APK

P.S.=> "Call me that, ONE MORE TIME..." - from Hancock ... apk
