Okay, so all slang is not international. I've asked on some other forums about some slang that people use that I didn't understand and really didn't get answers. So, I thought I'd start a thread where we can ask what a slang word means if we don't understand. It might be one-sided with me asking more than others, but that's okay if y'all don't mind sharing. And if it's something that is vulgar or considered offensive, please let us know...in a diplomatic way.

Also, if you just want to share some slang that other's might not know, and it's for general audiences, share away. For example, "my bad".

Here's some questions about slang for you.... mainly for the UKers.

• bloody (used as an adj.) - Is this considered vulgar or profanity? What is it's intended meaning?
• sarky - Is this used for short for contrasting something with sarcasm?

actually, bloody is considered by some to be "swearing" - mainly used in frustration i.e "bloody hell" if your internets has problems or "bloody thing" if your computer crashes so yes i guess profanity

• chuffed - I don't have any idea about this one, but I'm learning with y'all's help.

Short story: I taught a international class for a training program. Everyone spoke English in the class, but they were all different. The participants in the class were from the UK, Australia, Scotland, New York, & New Jersey. Then there was me with my supposed southern draw. You talk about speaking the same language but NOT speaking the same language at the same time...it was interesting!

you're spot on with spot on

chuffed just means pleased or happy with a certain thing - ie passing an exam, getting a gift etc.

I'm learning a new language...hmm, I'm chuffed!

It's kinda' funny: I speak English yet I'm learning English. Now if I could only get the accent right. I'll watch more of Harry Potter!

Why is it that so many of the movie stars actually have English (like UKer) accents but they don't have it in the movies? Like Dr. House.

I haven't seen 24 days later, or is that 28 days later? I dunno'. Edit: I have seen that movie, the virus movie. And now there's a 28 weeks later, too. Yeah, cool!

I think my first real experience with the accent was with Monty Python.

Okay, I saw another phrase that I think I understand, but... this guy said he couldn't be arsed now to answer a question. I'd take that as profanity, but not sure. Is it? And how did that come about?

the phrase "cannot be arsed" generally means "can't be bothered"

but yeah, Holy Grail is funny "the black knight" and "the knights that go nee", but Life Of Brian is my favourite - Fawlty Towers is great for a laugh even these days, rather watch all the old stuff than this modern comedy cr*p
